I will recreate the scroll arow with a new brass arrowhead and trident tip. The sheet copper arrow will be traced and planned to be recut with a modern extruded copper tube frame instead of the antique method on the original design.
I am cutting each of the sheet copper parts by hand so the replica has the character of the original. I may have normally cut the parts by laser for precision. I am using heavy .04 gauge copper sheet material, which is close to what was originally used, and it is difficult cutting it by hand. I can’t help but appreciate the efforts of the craftsman that made the original weathervane.
The arrow’s parts are cut, sanded, and ready to be assembled.
The copper scroll parts and solid brass arrowhead have been soldered to the copper frame.
Preparing the weathervane with a special primer for non ferrous metals. The primer is also tinted for use as a base for the gold leaf.
Gilding the banner with nearly pure (23.75kt) double gold leaf.
The completed replica weathervane with 1-1/8″ solid stainless steel post, gilded directionals and balls, and the gilded replica arrow in 32oz. copper plate.
