Click a part name below for information .

A. Figure

The FIGURE is the more significant and noticeable part of a weathervane that rotates at the top of the assembly.

B. Assembly

The standard Weathervane ASSEMBLY consists of a post, a small and a large ball or ornament and a set of directionals.

C. Post Root

The Post ROOT is the lower section of the post reserved for supporting the weathervane.  It is the portion “planted” in the ridge beam, cupola roof or in a mounting bracket.  It should be 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the post.

D. Bearing

Our captive BEARING is a single hardened, chrome steel, ball bearing that is crimped and soldered into every hand sculpted Ferro Weathervane. Machine weathervanes have crimped slug steel bearings.

E. Spindle Tube

Ferro Weathervanes have a hardened thick wall pure copper SPINDLE TUBE in all its hand sculpted weathervanes. Machine stamped weathervanes use thin brass alloy spindle tubes.

F. Spindle

The SPINDLE is the top of the post that the weathervane figure rides (actually hangs) on. Machine stamped weathervanes are supplied with a steel squared edge, flat tip. Experience has shown the squared edges can snag and even cut a weathervanes spindle tube from the inside. Ferro high grade stainless steel spindle & bearing-shaped tips are precision ground and polished to a radius to avoid this problem as well as reduce bearing surface allowing a long lasting, trouble free, smooth rotating action.

G. Small Ball

Small METAL BALLS about 2″-3″ diameter decorate the top of the post. Colorful glass balls are available also.

H. Directionals

Used to indicate the compass directions. A  brass DIRECTIONALS set is included with every weathervane. Several choice upgrades and historical replicas are also available.

I. Large Ball

METAL BALLS about 4″-8″ diameter decorate the bottom of the assembly.  Colorful GLASS BALLS, and several different style ORNAMENTS are also available.

J. Ring

A RING attached to the post is used to support the large copper ball, glass ball or ornament in place just above the weathervanes’ mounting so that the entire ball can be seen un-eclipsed from the ground.

K. Post

The most crucial part of a weathervane is its spine, which is the POST.  Our high strength, thread free, corrosion resistant, stainless steel posts are guaranteed for life. They are zero maintenance and trouble free. Machine stamped weathervanes are supplied with threaded steel posts.  Upgrading to a Ferro Post is recommended.

L. Time Capsule

Imagine 100 years from now, someone finds the TIME CAPSULE you built into your weathervane!

M. Dedications

A DEDICATION is a weathervane tradition of affixing initials, names or messages to pennies or plaques as a memorial or tribute to a person or occasion.

N. Arrow

Some weathervanes use an arrow as part of its design.  Arrows and Arrowheads can be purchased separately for replacement, or do it yourself projects.

O. Retaining Hook

RETAINING HOOKS and RETAINING WASHERS help prevent “lift”.  Whether it be the illegal type or the strong “wind beneath my wings kind”.

P. Spacers

Cover the simple unattractive look of a weathervane post by slipping on clever decorative SPACERS.

Q. Ornaments

Personalize your weathervane from the wide range of decorative ORNAMENTS we offer. These accessories range from metal or glass balls to Spheroids, polygons, Radials, Scrolls, and More!

R. Windcups Discontinued)

Now you can see wind speed as well as direction by adding anemometer style WINDCUPS  to your weathervane.

S. Grounding Clamp

When needed, this GROUNDING CLAMP makes grounding our weathervanes and finials easy.

T. Mounting Bracket

Embedding the weathervane post root directly in the roof is the best way to mount a weathervane. When that is impossible, there are various MOUNTING BRACKETS to help.  We also offer indoor display options.
