Antique Eagle Restoration – Squantum Association

Antique Eagle Restoration – Squantum Association

Custom Work

This antique eagle figure was created circa 1880 by the Harris & Co., Boston Weathervane company. It is listed in their catalog as No. 42 with 31″ wing spread for $75. The eagle has extensive damage to the shoulders, wings and ball.

A copper figure with such damage as this can not be properly repaired from the surface. It is necessary to disassemble the sections to be repaired. Most of this eagle was taken apart.

Once the parts are separated, every seem and repair area needs to be cleaned down to the bare copper in order for the new repairs and solder to bond properly.

Any dents or creases need to be patiently tapped back out into its original shape by skillful repoussé techniques.

The wings and shoulder took quite a bit of careful restoration.

The restored wings are precisely refitted to the body.

Jon is soldering the wing solidly back onto the body.

A sulfur solution is used to darken the bare copper areas and lead solder so that the repairs aren’t obvious.

The restored Eagle is ready to go home.

-Artist Bio-

Jon is one of the world’s up and coming weathervane sculptors. His pieces are solid, beautiful examples of a traditional trade. His work often goes home with him as chasing has become a hobby for him. Jon usually handles the larger and more complex pieces.
